Bespoke, Luxury Furniture by John Makepeace 

Welcome to John Makepeace Furniture Ltd.  Award-winning British Furniture Designer, John Makepeace OBE, specialises in the design of bespoke luxury furniture, mainly for private clients, from his home and studio in Beaminster, West Dorset.  John works closely with craftsmen to create eloquent, functional designs that meet human needs and ecological imperatives, using indigenous British timbers.  He compares his role to that of the composer and conductor working with instrumentalists, the craftsmen he has worked with for many years.  

 

'​My aim as a designer is to create more eloquent concepts for furniture.  The objective is to achieve lighter, stronger and more sculptural forms better suited to their function and more expressive of each commission.  Whereas 'modern' design has followed the Bauhaus principle of "expressing the new machine age" my concern is to give priority to human needs and aspirations whilst embracing the new ecological imperatives.  By using the wonderful range of indigenous timbers grown in Britain, I try to encourage excellent silviculture and a diverse woodland ecology.'
